Warm weather expected for NYE

Temperature will be in the late teens and early 20s for much of the country in the hours just before midnight and around midnight.

A warm night is on the cards as people prepare to farewell 2021 on Friday.

High pressure is likely to dominate New Zealand for the last day and night of 2021, good news for those heading out for New Year's Eve.

RuralWeather.co.nz - which has hourly 'feels like' temperatures for 10 days out - shows the Humidex (or 'feels like') temperature will be in the late teens and early 20s for much of the country in the hours just before midnight and around midnight itself.

There will be some areas that may be a little a cooler, mainly those locations at higher elevations, such as Queenstown and Taupo, which may be more in the mid to lower teens by late evening, says a spokesperson for the weather organisations.

"Those in the upper North Island will be warmest with temperatures in Auckland, Mt Maunganui and Whangamata likely around 20 to 23 degrees at midnight.

"Rain in Fiordland will mean cloudy weather is expected over into parts of Otago and Southland - the positive side to that is it will help keep temperatures milder at night."

WET WEATHER: There is the chance of a shower around East Cape and Gisborne on New Year's Eve daytime, but by evening conditions do look dry.

Any shower in the North Island will likely be highly isolated and short lived, says WeatherWatch.co.nz

"Rain is expected in Fiordland and, in fact, is forecast to get steadier and heavier as the day goes on with the bulk of the rainfall occurring at night and around midnight.

"South Westland may also be brushed by this rain or drizzle."
