NZ face West Indies in Bay Oval World Cup opener
New Zealand will take on the West Indies in the opening game of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2022 at the Bay Oval on March 4 2022.
The Mount Maunganui venue will also play host to one of the sport’s great rivalries, as the Pakistan and India teams go head to head on March 6 2022.
A total of seven games will be taking place in the Bay of Plenty. As well as the two aforementioned clashes, Australia face Pakistan on March 8, Pakistan take on South Africa on March 11, England will do battle with South Africa on March 14 before facing India on March 16 before Bangladesh and the West Indies wrap up the Oval action on March 18.
The identity of New Zealand’s opening match fixture opponents was not known until now but the West Indies have now qualified as per their world ranking – after the qualifying fixtures were called off due to Covid-19.
The tournament will be played in the league format, where all eight teams will face each other once, at the end of which the top four teams will qualify for the semi-finals.
The first semi-final will be played at The Basin Reserve in Wellington on March 30 while the Hagley Oval in Christchurch will host the second semi-final on March 31, the same venue will host the final on April 1.
The tournament will also mark the return of the women's global event since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The last global women's event played was the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in Australia in March 2020, which the hosts won by beating India in the final.
