Two pupils at Te Puna School attended classes last week whilst potentially infectious with Covid-19.

The school sent out a notice to parents and caregivers yesterday evening to confirm the school would be closed today after confirmation from the Ministry of Health that two children from the same family had tested positive for Covid-19.

Both pupils were at day 0 of infection last Thursday, when they attended school.

However, the notice made clear that the MOH still considers the risk of spread as “very low”, but Te Puna School made the decision to close as a precaution.

The notice alerted parents which pupils were now considered close contacts. It was advised those children should get tested immediately and self-isolate at home.

Te Puna School has also withdrawn their team from an after-school sporting event today.

The school is the third one today to confirm Covid positive cases.

Overnight and earlier today, Aquinas College and Mount Maunganui Intermediate sent letters to parents advising of a postive case at each school.

Last Thursday, Te Puna School sent out a similar alert advising that a parent of a child may have tested positive for Covid-19.

The MOH did not advise the school needed to close, however, some parents did keep children away.

The school was closed for a teacher’s only day on Monday.

Pirirākau Hauora, a Maori Health Care Service in Te Puna is offering Covid-19 testing at the Te Puna Rugby Club today from 10am.

“The Hauora team will be available at Te Puna Rugby Club from 10am on Wednesday 24th November to do covid swabbing, due to the notice sent from Te Puna School,” says a statement on their Facebook page.
