Severe weather warning with gales and heavy rain

MetService has issued a severe weather warning for parts of the North Island.
Heavy rain and severe gales are expected for central and northern New Zealand through to late Sunday, says a MetService spokesperson.

“A large and complex low pressure system and associated fronts are forecast to bring periods of heavy rain and severe gales to central and northern parts of the country through to late Sunday.”
Heavy rain Warnings and Watches, and strong wind Watches are in force for many places. People are advised to keep up to date with the latest forecasts in case any changes are made or more areas added. A heavy rain watch has been issued for the ranges of the Bay of Plenty east of Opotiki and inland Gisborne ranges. This is valid for 12 hours from 7am to 7pm on Sunday.

A heavy rain warning has been issued for Northland and Tararua Range.  Heavy rain may cause streams and rivers to rise rapidly. Surface flooding and slips are also possible and driving conditions may be hazardous. Area: Northland Valid: 14 hours from 10:00 pm Saturday to 12:00 pm Sunday Forecast: Periods of heavy rain are forecast through to midday Sunday.

Area: Tararua Range Valid: 18 hours from 6:00 am Sunday to 12:00 am Monday Forecast: Heavy rain are expected during Sunday. Between 6am and midnight Sunday, expect 80mm to 100mm of rain to accumulate. Peak rates of 15 to 20mm/h and thunderstorms possible .Note, the periods of heaviest rain are likely in the morning and again in the evening.
