BOP highway closed again due to flooding

SH30 was closed in the Eastern Bay.

UPDATE: Waka Kotahi NZTA says a section of road on State Highway 30 is again closed.

The road was initially closed earlier this morning, after heavy rain caused flooding in the area, but despite briefly reopening, Waka Kotahi is now advising the stretch is again closed.

“We are asking motorists in the eastern Bay of Plenty to take care on the roads, with heavy rain closing a section of State Highway 30 between Western Drain Road and State Highway 2, Awakeri.”

There is a detour in place for the SH30 closure, with eastbound traffic turning left onto Western Drain Road and then left again to rejoin SH30. Westbound traffic should turn right onto Western Drain Road and then right again to rejoin SH30.

Parts of State Highway 2 Waimana Gorge are down to one lane due to slips and fallen trees.

Motorists are asked to drive carefully and allow additional time for the detour route.

Stop/Go traffic management is in use at locations on SH2 through the Waimana Gorge, with temporary speed limits in place.

“People should remain alert for other unreported hazards and be mindful of contractors who could be out clearing hazards off the road,” says a Waka Kotahi statement.

“Please drive slowly through any work sites.”

EARLIER:

State Highway 30 in the Bay of Plenty is closed this morning due to flooding.

Waka Kotahi Transport Agency says the highway is closed between Western Drain Road and SH2/Awakeri Road.

Heavy rain has pummelled the Bay of Plenty overnight after the MetService issued a severe weather warning for heavy rain.

That warning is still in force and is expected to be lifted later today.

Meanwhile, motorists are being warned to be careful on the roads due to flooding and numerous slips reported around the region.

“Take extra care and allow extra time for detour via Western Drain Road.”

The detour route is as follows:

Westbound traffic: left to Western Drain Rd to SH2 (Awakeri Rd), right to continue west. Eastbound traffic: continue on SH2 to Western Drain Rd and turn left to return to SH30.
