Severe weather watch issued for BOP

Heavy rain is expected for the Bay of Plenty.

A severe weather watch is in force for the Bay of Plenty.

Heavy rain and gale southeasterlies are being forecast for parts of the North Island and the Marlborough Sounds.

"A low pressure system is expected to approach the North Island from the north Tasman Sea on Wednesday," says a MetService spokesperson.

"The low should then move southeast across the Island during Thursday and Friday, bringing periods of
heavy rain and strong winds to parts of the North Island, and also the Marlborough Sounds.

"People are advised to keep up to date with the latest forecasts in case parts of the Watches are upgraded to Orange Warnings, or further areas are added."

HEAVY RAIN WATCH

Area: Northland
Valid: 21 hours from 10pm Wednesday to 7pm Thursday
Forecast: Periods of heavy rain. Rainfall amounts may approach warning criteria.
Note, heavy rain easing for a time Thursday morning.

Area: Auckland, Great Barrier Island
Valid: 25 hours from 2am Thursday to 3am Friday
Forecast: Periods of heavy rain. Rainfall amounts may approach warning criteria.

Area: Coromandel Peninsula
Valid: 24 hours from 3am Thursday to 3am Friday
Forecast: Periods of heavy rain. Rainfall amounts may approach warning criteria.

Area: Bay Of Plenty, Rotorua, and Gisborne north of Ruatoria including the ranges
Valid: 22 hours from 3am Thursday to 1am Friday
Forecast: Periods of heavy rain. Rainfall amounts may approach warning criteria.

Note, for Gisborne, another period of heavy southerly rain is likely during Friday morning and afternoon.

Area: Hawke's Bay

Forecast: Southeast winds may approach severe gale in exposed places at times.

Area: The Marlborough Sounds

Forecast: Southeast winds may approach severe gale in exposed places at times.
