The pressure on Auckland hospitals from the Covid-19 outbreak has forced patients with spinal injuries to be transferred to Christchurch.

There are 32 Covid-19 patients in hospital, with eight in intensive care, and the call has gone out for nurses around the country to assist.

All three of Auckland's main hospitals are building more negative pressure rooms to keep up with the Delta strain of Covid-19.

Health Minister Andrew Little says the Ministry of Health and district health boards are also transferring patients to other centres.

He says one example is patients with spinal injuries who live just south of the Bombay Hills, and who would normally go to Middlemore Hospital, are being sent to Christchurch.
