Tauranga Council upgrading 100-year-old pipes
Regular users of Cameron Road will experience traffic delays next week as about 3km of sewer pipes underneath the main road will be replaced.
Starting on Monday, July 26, council contractors will begin stage one of the wastewater upgrade, as part of the Futureproofing Cameron Road project.
In a newsletter on its website, Tauranga City Council says they will reach two “significant milestones for Futureproofing Cameron Road over the coming weeks”.
“We are in the final stages of completing the detailed design and we are commencing our wastewater upgrade.”
Starting Monday, Fulton Hogan and Downer will be replacing the sewer pipes running from Harington Street to Elizabeth Street.
“It’s expected this work will take up to three months to complete,” says council.
“After contractors have completed stage one, they will move to the second stage - upgrading the wastewater pipes between Elizabeth Street and 6th Avenue.
“Some pipes underneath Cameron Road are still made of clay and are more than 100 years old.
“We are taking the opportunity to prepare for growth and replace and upsize the old sewer pipes before the main works above the ground on Cameron Road start later this year.”
Council says this upgrade of the wastewater assets will help to realise the Te Papa Spatial Plan, supporting more housing and business developments along the Cameron Road corridor.
Road users are being cautioned that this work, combined with safety improvements around the Farmer’s building, will cause delays for commuters.
“Traffic will be impacted in the areas where our contractors are actively working, but this will be monitored and managed,” says council.
“Sections of the eastern side of Cameron Road (the city side) and some side streets will be closed to motorists throughout the works. Detours will be in place to manage access to businesses.
“We recommend you plan your journey accordingly.”
