Matariki Celbrations are underway

The Incubator Creative Hub and Okorore Nga Toi Maori team are inviting the community to enjoy their largest calendar of events yet at the Tauranga Historic Village.

Five exhibitions from local artists will run until July 4, and the programme also includes workshops, a weekly showcase of local Maori film makers, musical performances and the inaugural Matariki market on June 27.

One of the exhibitons is Te iwa o Matariki by Michelle Estall. The theme of this exhibition is Te Iwa o Matariki / The nine of Matariki, which is also the title of the leading image of the exhibition. The rest of the exhibition would consist of nine circular paintings, each depicting a star within the Matariki cluster and a representation of its meaning.

For more Matariki events visit the website.

Tauranga Art Gallery Toi Tauranga is hosting Laurie Steer: The Abundance of Water until 18 July. The gallery is open daily from 10am to 4pm.

Based in Mount Maunganui, contemporary artist Laurie Steer specialises in unique wood-fired ceramics. Initially trained in sculpture, Steer’s fascination with pottery led him to work under renowned late-ceramicist Barry Brickell for several years from Brickell’s base at Driving Creek Railway and Potteries, Coromandel.
