To answer your question in one word - ARROGANCE. I was driving up Cameron Road last week and a fluro, lycra clad, cyclist (and I only describe him as such because he was and to show he was often on our roads or wouldn’t have all the gear) was all over the road and not once was he in the cyclist lane. I even commented to my Wife, "and they wonder why they get hit" and then have the audacity to blame car users who have to live with it for the rest of their life. IDIOT.

The article is well written, the accident involved a car vs cyclist. I’m fairly confident the cyclist did not hit the driver of the car, whereas the cyclist almost certainly would have impacted with the car. BTW I almost hit a cyclist on Wednesday, I was at the traffic lights & had a green light with all cars in the opposite direction stopped as they should. The next thing a cyclist comes breezing right through the intersection & had to slam on their brakes to avoid hitting me. Genuine question - what is it about cyclists which makes them think the rules don’t apply to them?

Oh dear

This is an example of the problems faced by cyclists and pedestrians all day, every day, every where in Tauranga. Many drivers are arrogant, selfish and incompetent.

wording is important

Firstly hope the cyclist is ok. Did the cyclist hit a parked car? Was the car driven by a human? Driver of car and cyclist/bike rider had a crash, or are we now living in a time of fully autonomous vehicles crashing into cyclists? Wording of stories like this only further dehumanises the actions/inactions of drivers/motorists.
