Wasterwater overflow: People warned to stay away

People are being warned to stay out of the water at Matapihi Beach and the city centre Tidal Steps after a wasterwater overflow.

Yesterday afternoon, Tauranga City Council issued a statement saying the overflow was at the end of the Matapihi peninsula.

The unknown amount of wastewater overflowed from a pipe undergoing maintenance across the harbour. There is no damage or break in the actual pipeline, council said in the statement.

Tauranga City Council says the overflow,  at the end of Matapihi Road, was stopped last night and contractors were cleaning up the areas.

As a precaution, signage at both Matapihi beach and the city centre Tidal Steps will ask people to stay out of the water until testing shows it is safe, council say on their Facebook page.

“The area is cordoned off and security guards will remain on site to redirect people until the clean-up is complete.”

So a warning sign making it safe. I hope they get charged in court by the regional council.
