A heavy rain warning is in force for the Bay of Plenty today.

The MetService issued the warning overnight and says it may be valid until 1pm Wednesday.

"A low over the north Tasman Sea is expected to move across the North Island during Wednesday," says a spokesperson for the weather organisation.

"The low is forecast to bring heavy rain to several regions of the North Island. However, there is some uncertainty in the track of the low and the expected rainfall accumulations in several areas.

"People are advised to keep up to date with the latest forecasts and warnings as the low approaches New Zealand."
