SH2 traffic lanes to move at Bayfair roundabout
Significant changes to the road layout on State Highway 2 (SH2) Maunganui Road at the Bayfair roundabout are scheduled to take place from next week.
Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency Regional Manager Infrastructure Delivery Jo Wilton says with four of the five ground improvements sites completed the focus now moves to construction of the underpass and the Bayfair flyover.
“People would have noticed one of the rigs doing the ground improvements has moved off site, and the other is due to finish up this month. We are really pleased with how the new design has progressed and we can begin on the next phase,” says Wilton.
The next phase involves constructing a temporary road in the middle of the current work zone north of the Bayfair roundabout.
Traffic will be moved across to the centre to allow space for the new cyclist and pedestrian underpass to be constructed either side.
“Construction of the new underpass is an exciting step for the project. In a few months we’ll also start to see the concrete piers being installed, which will support the Bayfair flyover,” says Wilton.
From Tuesday, April 6, a series of night works will be carried out over about three weeks to create the new lanes and reconfigure the Bayfair roundabout.
The Bayfair roundabout will be made slightly smaller than what is currently in place.
This layout is expected to be in place until the end of the year.
“We realise drivers and cyclists have become accustomed to the larger formation of the roundabout and so a smaller one will take some time to get used to, however the temporary roundabout will still be larger than before the project started.
“The speed through this area remains 30km/h and we really encourage people to make sure they indicate when using the roundabout and take time to get used to the new layout,” says Wilton.
The new roundabout is scheduled to be operational from Wednesday, April 14.
This work is weather dependent and we will keep people updated with how we are progressing.
The current schedule for night works is as follows:
- On Tuesday, April 6, to Wednesday, April 7, (finishing Thursday morning) between 7pm and 5am lane closures will be in place on the approaches to and around the Bayfair roundabout while asphalting work is underway.
- On Sunday, April 11, to Thursday, April 15, (finishing Friday morning) between 7pm and 5am lane closures will be in place on the approaches to and around the Bayfair roundabout while a new road layout is configured in this area.
- On Tuesday, April 13, (finishing Wednesday morning) between 7pm and 5am, a partial closure of the Bayfair roundabout is scheduled. During these hours motorists from Girven Road will not be able to travel through the roundabout or turn right onto SH2. SH2 southbound traffic will also not be able to turn right onto Matapihi Road. A sign-posted detour will be available via the Sandhurst Drive/Mangatawa Interchange.
Please drive with caution through the project site, reduce your speed and follow the directions provided. Where possible, please use alternative routes or plan your travel outside of this work.
In the event of bad weather or other unforeseen circumstances, this work may be moved to the next suitable night/s.
Waka Kotahi thanks local residents, businesses and motorists for their patience while we deliver this project. Updated information is available as work progresses and can be found on the Bay Link website: nzta.govt.nz/baylink
