Heavy rain forecast to lash Coromandel

Coromandel residents are being urged to prepare for a deluge of heavy rain today.
The MetService is forecasting heavy rain for the region this evening.
A severe weather watch is in place.
"A broad low is expected to pass over the upper North Island this afternoon and evening, bringing heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms," says a statement from the weather organisation.
"More persistent rain is expected about Coromandel and a watch is now in force.
"There is also a risk of severe thunderstorms and locally heavy downpours about parts of the upper North Island.
"People are advised to stay up to date with latest forecasts, in case part of this watch is upgraded to a warning."

Forecast: Period of heavy rain, with isolated thunderstorms and locally heavy downpours. Rainfall accumulations could approach short duration warning criteria in localised areas.
