The public are being asked to stay away from the Fergusson Park area in Matua today.

The Bay of Plenty Regional Council is conducting its biannual oil spill response training exercise from 8.30am to 3.30pm.

"The public are asked to stay away from our area of operations during this time, but the northern side of the boat ramp will still be available for boats to come and go," says a spokesperson for BOPRC.

"This training helps ensure we are prepared to respond in an oil incident and that our Oil Spill Response Plan is coordinated and effective.

"We will be using booms, oil skimmers, boats and PPE to contain and clean up the oil."

The training is an inter-agency exercise including staff from the Regional Council response team including the Regional Harbourmaster, Maritime NZ, Tauranga City Council, Department of Conservation, iwi, Waikato Regional Council & Gisborne District Council.
