Fatal crash on SH29

UPDATE: 07.36PM One person has died following a crash in the Lower Kaimai this afternoon. 

Emergency services were alerted to the incident on State Highway 29 between Soldiers Road and Valley View Road at around 3.40pm.

"Police can confirm one person has died in the crash between two vehicles on SH29, Lower Kaimai, this afternoon," says a police spokesperson.

Another person was airlifted to Waikato Hospital with critical injuries whilst two other people were taken by ambulance to Tauranga Hospital in serious condition. 

Waka Kotahi NZTA have reported that the road remains closed between Poripori Rd and the SH29/SH28 intersection.

"The road is expected to reopen within the next hour once emergency services have finished at the scene," says a police spokesperson.


Emergency services responded to a serious crash between two vehicles on SH29.

A St John spokesperson says they got the call at 3.37pm and that three ambulances and two helicopters at the scene.

One eyewitness says the incident involved a truck and a ute with people said to be trapped.

Another caller to the SunLive 0800 number, who works near the area, says he saw at least four ambulances, three fire trucks and several police cars on route to the scene.

“It is like every emergency service in Tauranga is on the way,” says the caller.
