Tauranga residents hoping for a McDonald’s may have to travel further afield with major renovations at the burger chain’s city site.

The McDonald’s on the corner of Cameron Road and 11th Ave is out of action for the foreseeable future.

It’s hoped the store will only be shut for four weeks, although no official timeframe has been put on the work with weather a potential issue.

A more specific timeline is expected in the coming week.

The site is currently boarded up for demolition and shut to the public but owner-operator John Warder is promising a much improved experience for customers when it reopens.

“It is a pretty massive reinvestment programme,” says John.

“McDonald’s is always taking a look at itself and trying to stay leading edge and current to where customer expectations are.”

The McDonald’s has been in its current spot for about 30 years and is a regular spot for locals looking for a quick bite.

The renovations were planned for a similar period in 2020 but the impact of the Covid-19 lockdown pushed plans back a year.

The renovations will include work on drive-thru capacity and kitchen capacity as well as a complete uplift of the interior design.

“The décor inside, there will be nothing comparable in Tauranga,” John promises.

“It is going to be a very different looking McDonald’s restaurant.”

Other restaurants in the Tauranga area include McDonald's Greerton on Cameron Road, McDonald's Mount Maunganui on Maunganui Road, McDonald’s Bayfair at the Bayfair Shopping Centre and McDonalds Papamoa at Papamoa Plaza.

For those wishing to travel further afield there is also the McDonald’s in Te Puke, along Jellicoe Street.

Lucky TCC isn’t involved or there would be a new McSteak.

Four weeks avoiding food that is probably not so healthy, might be a good thing... Unless they all go to Wendy’s instead...
