BOP schools thrive at volleyball tournament
Three Bay of Plenty volleyball teams have taken out the top spots at a North Island secondary school tournament in Tauranga.
Year 9 and 10 students from across the country came together this week to participate in the Junior Secondary School North Island Volleyball Champs at Trustpower Arena.
A nail-biting boy's division one final saw Tauranga Boys’ College win against Mount Maunganui College.
"They played an incredible final," says event organiser Tracey Braddock.
Trident High School in Whakatane took out first place in the division one girls final against Rangitoto College.
Tracey says the skill level among these Bay of Plenty teams is very high.
"Technically and tactically we are getting some really advanced athletes coming through. They jump high and move really fast - they also have great technique."

The tournament’s most valuable player awards also both went to Bay of Plenty students.
Kiah Jackson from Tauranga Boys’ College won the boys MVP and Trident High School’s Nivaloh Elliot won the girls.
More than 100 North Island teams got involved in the tournament this week, with Tracey saying all schools brought along a great team spirit.
"The team spirit among all the schools was so exciting and entertaining at this tournament. It really came out."
She says the highlight of the tournament was three Bay of Plenty teams taking away division one medals.
"It was also so great to see such a large number of Bay Of Plenty schools that entered into the tournament. It is great to see so many students getting into the sport."
The final part of the tournament is being held at Mount Maunganui Main Beach today, with around 140 junior teams playing beach volleyball. The finals for the one-day competition are set to kick off at 4pm today.
