Amid what can be described as a challenging year, a local Christmas event is bringing “something positive to the community”.

The sun was shining for the Pyes Pa Tauriko Lions Club Christmas at the Lakes event on Sunday at the Koikoi Reserve, which saw a large crowd turn out for the festivities.

The event started with Santa arriving in a little red Corvette Stingray, followed by performances from a variety of local talent.

Busking duo Serotonin, the Innerlife Church band, soloist Alyssa Oxenham and dancers from Precision Dance all performed to the crowds, along with Bay Music School and children from Taumata School.

Kids were given a chance to learn some circus tricks from Circus in a Flash and test their batting skills with Tauranga City Baseball.

The queues were long for face painting, balloons, the colouring competition, Christmas crafts, the bouncy castle and the chance to sit on Santa's knee.

Club President Neil McCormick says the event was a big undertaking for a club of 10 members.

But, he was "very pleased" to be able to provide something positive for the community in what has been a challenging year for all.

The club really appreciates the assistance from the wider Lions community and would especially like to acknowledge the generous support of many local businesses and the TCC, he says.

"We’re already looking forward to running the event again next year."
