Search for swimmer at Mount Maunganui continues

12.45pm Update: A search and rescue operation is still continuing in Mount Maunganui following earlier reports of a missing swimmer.

"They've been looking for about 45 minutes now with the helicopter and search and rescue out there," says Jeremy Sparrow.

Police say they received a report about 10.35am of a man who appeared to have gone missing in the water off Marine Parade.

Police are now searching the area with assistance from Surf Life Saving, the Coastguard, and the TECT Rescue Helicopter.

"They're searching between Shark Alley and Tay St," says Jeremy. "They've been canvassing a wider area, with the helicopter flying up and down quite low.

"There are two or three boats out in the water."

Groups of people are congregating along the beach waiting and watching as the search continues.

Family are being supported by Police as the search continues.

Earlier, 11.30am A search and rescue operation is underway in Mount Maunganui following reports of a missing swimmer.

A police spokesperson says they received a report about 10:35am of a person who appeared to have gone missing in the water off Marine Parade in Mount Maunganui.

"Police are at the scene with Surf Life Saving and Search and Rescue.

"A rescue helicopter has been dispatched to assist with the search."
