Motorists are being warned to expect delays on State Highway 2, following reports of a tree being down near Te Puna.

Firefighters are working to remove a tree which has come down just north of Te Puna.

Fire and Emergency northern communications shift manager Chris Dalton says the road is currently blocked, but the crew is clearing the tree with a chainsaw.

Strong winds are ripping through the region today as severe weather continues around New Zealand.

Powerco is reporting that power is out in Te Puke.

Around 206 properties are affected by the outage.

Powerco hopes to have the supply restored around 3pm.

Meanwhile, there are reports of a car in a ditch on SH2, near Francis Road.

A SunLive reader says it looks like everyone is out of the vehicle and emergency services are at the scene.
