Motorists are being advised to expect delays following a vehicle collision on  Takitimu Drive State Highway 2.

A police spokeswoman says they were notified of a crash in the east bound lane between Hewletts Road and the Mirrielees Road on ramp at 4.15pm.

One lane has been blocked, and a tow truck is on the way to the scene.

A St John spokesperson says one person with moderate injuries has been transported to Tauranga Hospital.

The police spokeswoman says the crash is between a car and a ute, and both vehicles appear to be damaged.

A SunLive reporter says traffic is backed up along Cameron Road to Elizabeth Street trying to get onto the Tauranga Harbour Bridge.

There is also major congestion on the bridge.

NZTA is advising motorists to expect delays or avoid the area.

Bridge marina

The crash was at the bridge marina lights, east bound. An older Toyota Corolla hatchback smashed into the back of a late model Ute, the corolla was very well wedge under the bumper of the Ute! Heaps of people were standing around looking at the wreckage and of course Tauranga motorists were trying to push Infront of each other to get around the accident and rubber necking.
