National weather update
WeatherWatch report there is a low pressure system to the northwest drawing in an easterly airflow over the North Island today.
Meanwhile a ridge of high pressure is over the South Island.
A few slow-moving troughs linger over Northland today bringing showers. These may be heavy especially in the northeast, then easing this evening.
Auckland, Coromandel and Bay of Plenty will experience morning showers or drizzle, which will clear as some sun breaks through. Morning cloud will break to some sun about the Waikato.
It will be mostly cloudy along the east coast with drizzle or showers, with some rain around the north of Gisborne this evening.
Morning cloud will break to sunny areas for the lower western North Island from Taranaki to Wellington. Winds for all the North Island will come from the east or southeast.
In the South Island, morning rain in Nelson will ease to showers in the afternoon then clearing away, with some sun possible before dusk.
Morning showers and drizzle will clear from Marlborough through to Canterbury, with some sun breaking through in the afternoon.
It will be mostly sunny about Otago and Southland, with a frosty start especially inland, and some morning coastal cloud about Otago clearing. There will be fog or low cloud about inland areas clearing in the morning but hanging around all day for some places.
The forecast today for the West Coast is for a mostly sunny day. Some cloud will start to move in from the north reaching Hokitika by the evening, with showers pushing down from the north reaching Greymouth in the afternoon. The South Island will experience winds coming from the northeast.
