A thunderstorm watch is being issued for the Coromandel region, while a heavy rain warning is in force for the Bay of Plenty.

A front is expected to move slowly south over Northland this afternoon and evening and then affect the Coromandel Peninsula overnight and Thursday morning.

There is a moderate risk of thunderstorms associated with this front, some of these may be severe bringing localised downpours of 25 to 40mm per hour, says a MetService spokesperson.

A heavy rain warning is also in force for the Coromandel Peninsula, and is now in force for Western Bay of Plenty including the Kaimai Range, and also Gisborne.

“The Coromandel Peninsula could be affected by severe thunderstorms overnight and Thursday morning.

“Rainfall of this intensity can cause surface and/or flash flooding, especially about low-lying areas such as streams, rivers or narrow valleys, and may also lead to slips.”

A strong wind watch is also in force for Auckland, Coromandel Peninsula, northern parts of Waikato and Western Bay of Plenty.

“People are advised to keep up to date with the latest forecasts in case parts of the watch are upgraded to a full warning or further areas are added.”
