Man‘s hand severed in Taneatua assault

UPDATE 9.45PM: Police are investigating a serious assault which took place on McKenzie St in Taneatua today.

Police were called to reports of an incident two or three houses down from the Gull service station just before 2.30pm.

The assault resulted in a 27-year-old man receiving serious head injuries and one of his hands was severed.

He is currently in a serious but stable condition in hospital.

"Police would like to speak with anyone who either witnessed the incident, or saw a black coloured Great Wall ute in the Taneatua or Ruatoki area this afternoon," says Sergeant Helen Hay.

"We would also like to reassure the community that even though this happened in a public place, we do not believe there is any risk to the wider public."

Earlier 5.20pm A serious incident resulting in a person receiving injuries this afternoon is being investigated in Taneatua.

"Police are currently making enquiries following the incident outside a Taneatua premises at about 2.30pm today," says a Police spokesperson.
 
"One person is reported to have received injuries."
