Man appears on Te Teko murder charge

A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a woman in the rural Bay of Plenty town of Te Teko.

The 24-year-old appeared in Tauranga District Court via audio-visual link from Rotorua on Saturday morning.

He faces one count of murder in relation to the death of a woman at a property in Powells Rd in Te Teko on Friday.

Police were called to a property, in the small settlement about 25km from Whakatane, after a "serious incident" around 11.15am and took the man into custody. 

During his appearance on Saturday, the man entered no plea and was granted interim name suppression by community magistrate Lesley Jensen.

The magistrate also ordered suppression of the victim’s details until a post-mortem and formal identification was completed.

No bail was sought and the man was remanded in custody to reappear in the Tauranga High Court at 9am on Tuesday, June 24.
