Sinking boat retrieved from Pilot Bay

A boat that was sinking in Pilot Bay this morning has been floated.

Harbourmaster Peter Buell says eight people have been working to retrieve a recreational vessel since earlier this morning at Salisbury Wharf.

“We have just floated it and we are about to move it to the marina.”

He says it was a little problematic to retrieve the boat as it was wedged underneath the wharf.

Bay of Plenty Regional Council vessel Awanui was used to pump water out of the sinking boat.

Peter estimates about 5 to 10 litres of diesel leaked into the water. He says booms were deployed to soak up diesel, and there haven’t been any issues with the substance coming ashore.

The crew are now working to move the boat to the marina and retrieve it from the water.

Peter couldn't determine the exact cause of the sinking boat.

Lack of foresight

It seems that every time a boat sinks in Pilot bay, it’s a big expensive job to retrieve it. Not sure of the history of this boat, but previous boats have been abandoned in Pilot bay with no way of contacting owners. Instead of moving the boat off the water, it’s left to rot until they sink.
