Nine new cases of COVID-19 today

Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield.

There are nine new cases of COVID-19 in New Zealand today, made up of four confirmed and five probable cases.

Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield and Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern are providing an update from the All of Government COVID-19 National Response this afternoon.

Ashley says all these cases are linked to existing confirmed cases.

There are 18 people in various hospitals around the country and three people in intensive care. Of those, two are in critical condition.

Ashley has confirmed that a death in Invercargill earlier this week was COVID-19 related.

More than 4100 tests were processed in New Zealand yesterday.

Ashley says there are still 16 clusters in New Zealand.

He says over the past week efforts have been made to do wider community testing, to help confirm there is no underlying community transmission.

Random testing will continue over the next week, he says.

In New Zealand, 131 health care workers are confirmed or probable cases of COVID-19. Ashley says 50 per cent were infected in the workplace, and 43 of those workers have already recovered.

Cabinet will meet at 10.30am tomorrow to determine whether to extend COVID-19 alert level 4 beyond the current deadline of Wednesday midnight.

The announcement will be made at 4pm tomorrow, Jacinda says.

“I want to acknowledge we have been successful to date in rolling out our plan because we have had a plan, and we have stuck to it and we have done it together.

“We are breaking the chain of transmission."

She says it is important to keep in mind the fight against COVID-19 is a longterm project.

"A move to alert level 3, whenever it comes, is not a return to pre-COVID 19 life for any of us."

Earlier: Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield and Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern will be providing an update from the All of Government COVID-19 National Response.

They will be speaking live from Wellington at 1pm today.
