LIVE updates: “Community transmission to increase”

Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield.

As we head into day five of the nationwide lockdown, the Director-General of Health has no doubt the cases of community transmission of Covid-19 are on the rise.

It's not yet known how New Zealand's first Covid-19-related fatality caught the virus.

The woman in her 70s died in Grey Base Hospital yesterday morning.

Ashley Bloomfield has been asked how many of the 514 cases to date have been community transmission.

"I don't have the exact figure and of the new cases in the last day or two, many of those are still being followed up and investigated.

"The number associated with community transmission will be increasing, I have no doubt about that, and particularly because we are seeing those small number of clusters around the place."

Some of the modelling on which the government has relied on for its response will be released in the next day or so; the prime minister says the rest is already publicly available.

I agree with you, and closure might give overworked staff a well-earned break. I guess it is over to the Supermarkets to decide, and I’m sure they will be in consultation with the Authorities. There is no physical reason I can see, why they need to be open for a traditional holiday.

People alone.

As one of the many who live alone, I am very pleased to see that what the PM previously said on March 24th regarding this has been confirmed, and we are allowed to have ONE support person, PROVIDED that person is asymptomatic, is in self-isolation (as all of us are at the moment) and that person has no contacts outside their own bubble. For me, this is a neighbour and it means a lot. Kudos to the Government for thinking about things like this.

What Are You Thinking?

Why in the world would you relax Easter trading laws. Shut the supermarkets and everything else too. Allowing them to open because we’re in isolation is a step of stupidity. Everyone survives the current Easter trading laws. This just beggars all belief. May as well open holiday parks for Easter too and actually a spot of fishing and hunting would be great. After all this time cooped up. WHY ARE YOU NOT THINKING. SHUT THE DOORS LIKE NORMAL. People are still shopping daily and able to so why would you relax the laws for Easter. Unbelievable you would even consider this.
