Tauranga parking fee collection on hold

Tauranga City Council is putting a hold on collecting parking fees while the country is in Alert Level 4.

New Zealand went into lockdown at 11.59pm on Wednesday, and while there were still many people out and about on Thursday, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says the majority of the country is staying in their isolation bubble.

As many New Zealanders adjusted to staying at home, Tauranga City Council made the decision to halt parking fee collections for the remainder of the lockdown.

"The fee suspension applies to all on and off-street parking spaces and parking buildings, effective from Friday, March 27, " says a council spokesperson.

"The council’s focus during the lockdown period is on safe and considerate parking.

"If anyone is concerned about someone being parked illegally, please call the contact centre on 07 577 7000."

I agree. I got a ticket for a broken indicator lens. Only part of the lens was missing, the rest was held in place with clear tape. When I challenged the fine, I was told that the broken lens doesn’t meet WOF standards. I challenged them on that asking them to provide proof that the person issuing the ticket was qualified to assess a vehicles condition for WOF and also asked if TCC now have authority to conduct roadside WOF testing. I received a reply saying that in this instance TCC has decided not to proceed further. No apology. No wonder people don’t go to the CBD. Why would you when you have to endure this rubbish. Gower to The Lakes, Bayfair... even the Mount main street. Free no hassle parking.

Parking wardens removed from Essential Services list.

Really? There’s no one around anyway. What there is in the way of shops are closed. This is so big and generous of Council. Parking Wardens are hardly essential services when the country is in lockdown. Go and isolate yourselves.

After many many years of working in the central city observing the slow death of city shopping I consider the way parking has been "policed" to be a major factor. In the next month maybe the whole team, from the office wallah who runs them and signs all correspondence down to the street walkers, how about have this lock down time to think about adjusting your role in a way to revitalise the city. There must be a better solution to people frightened to come in because of fear of being fined. Might be time to let him go finally too
