Coronavirus: New travel restrictions in force

Health officials have ramped up their presence at airports in New Zealand as tougher travel restrictions came into force today.

From 1am today all travellers who enter the country, except from Pacific Island countries, must go into isolation for 14 days.

Since the announcement of the new restrictions airlines have been overwhelmed with calls, and are asking for patience from their customers.

The tourism industry also say they'll be affected by the new rules and are predicting widespread job losses.

But Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says a relief package will be unveiled on Tuesday to try to mitigate the blow.

So far New Zealand has eight confirmed cases of Covid-19 as two more people tested positive yesterday.

Across the globe, there is chaos at US airports after new health screening measures came into force for people returning from Europe.

In Britain, every person over the age of 70 will be told "within the coming weeks" to stay at home for an extended period.

No Exceptions

I feel exactly the same way about this. If the Prime Minister is sincere about prioritising public health there should be no exceptions. After all Pasifika countries are happy for their citizens to have and benefit from New Zealander status in good times. So why are they not now required to make the same sacrifices as other New Zealanders. This is no time for political correctness.

WHY?

Why are Pasifika exempt? I know that on several occasions I have had a stopover in Fiji when returning to NZ from Europe. It breaks the journey and is a few days of R & R before getting down to serious business at home. It seems obvious to me that this is politically motivated but what is that motivation?
