Highway open after fatal BOP crash

State Highway 33 is open following a fatal crash in the Bay of Plenty.

One person has died after two cars crashed on the highway, near Paengaroa, at about 5.30pm on Wednesday.

Another person was taken to hospital in critical condition, says a police spokesperson.

The highway was closed for several hours, as crash scene investigators examined the scene.

Police say the highway was reopened around 10.30pm.

"Police thank motorists for their patience.

"Enquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing."

And as usual we will never find out the cause of the collision so we can’t modify our driving to suit or take precautions to prevent the same happening to us or our loved ones...
