A man charged with murder following the death of a 22-year-old at Waihi Beach is denying the charge.

Asha Carden-Soole is facing one count of murder and unlawfully carrying or possessing a firearm.

Name suppression lapsed for the murder-accused when he appeared in Tauranga High Court via audio visual link today.

He also pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The 21-year-old farm-hand from Matamata is accused of murdering a 22-year-old at a Seaforth Road property in Waihi Beach on January 3 or 4.

During his court appearance today, his lawyer Russel Boot agreed there were no grounds to continue name suppression.

The accused was supported in court by family and friends who appeared visibly upset - at the start of his appearance he told them “Love you guys” as they sat in the public gallery.

He will reappear in the Hamilton Court for an electronically monitored bail application on February 17.

A trial date has been set for November 30.
