Waikato University reopens after bomb scare

Updated 3pm. Waikato University in Tauranga has been cleared of a bomb threat.

The campus on Durham Street had been evacuated earlier amid reports of a bomb threat.

"At 1.33pm today, a University of Waikato staff member was phoned by an unknown person who said there was a bomb on our Durham Street Tauranga campus," says a Waikato University spokesperson.

"At 1.40pm the building was evacuated as per the normal procedure, and the University notified the police

The police have now cleared campus, and the building is now reopened, the spokesperson says.

Earlier: Waikato University in Tauranga is being evacuated amid reports of a bomb threat.

"At 1.33pm today, a University of Waikato staff member was phoned by an unknown person who said there was a bomb on our Durham Street Tauranga campus," says a Waikato University spokesperson.

"At 1.40pm the building was evacuated as per the normal procedure, and the University notified the police who are in attendance.

"We will provide an update as more information comes to hand."

A reporter at the scene says people are gathering outside the Trustpower building on Durham Street.

A SunLive reader has emailed in saying “they are evacuating the building due to a threat being made".

Not Right

Why do the bomb alert photos show the Police standing in the doorway of the building and why is evacuation for a bomb scare (in today’s world) only across the road. Surely out of the street altogether would be more sensible. The threat needs to be taken more seriously, especially with the level of violence escalating in Tauranga.
