The NZ Transport Agency advise that traffic is expected to be busy and congested again on State Highway 2 today through the Karangahake Gorge, between Tauranga and Katikati, and through the Waioeka Gorge.

State Highway 25a near Hikuai is also expected to be congested this afternoon.

The Paeroa to Waihi stretch through the Karangahake Gorge is expected to be busy between 1pm and 4.30pm for eastbound traffic and between 10.30am and 2pm for westbound traffic today.

Traffic is also expected to be busy and congested on SH2 between Katikati and Tauranga between 12pm and 4pm for eastbound traffic and between 10am and 5pm for westbound traffic today.

On SH25A near Tairua and Hikuai, traffic is expected to be busy through this area between 11.30am and 4.30pm for eastbound traffic.

Further south on SH2 through the Waioeka Gorge between Opotiki to Gisborne, a temporary speed restriction is in place due to a fatigue stop. Extra care is advised through the Waioeka Gorge.

Road users are advised to expect delays and allow extra time for their journeys when travelling through this area.

Tips for safe driving on your summer holiday:

Check your car is in good ‘health’ before you head off. Check your tyre pressure and tread, windscreen wipers, indicators and lights.

Take extra care when travelling in holiday periods because of increased traffic volumes, congestion, tiredness and people driving in unfamiliar environments.

Drive to the conditions - whether it’s the weather, the road you’re on, the time of day or amount of traffic.

Avoid fatigue. Take regular breaks to stay alert.

Keep a safe following distance from vehicles in front so you can stop safely.

Be patient - overtaking is unlikely to make a significant difference to your journey time due to the amount of traffic expected over the weekend.

Allow plenty of time. Remember you are on holiday, so there’s no need to rush.
