Police would like to thank motorists for their patience, a spokesperson says.

Updated 10:45am Police have confirmed one person has died following the crash on Kopu-Hikuai Road near Thames this morning.

Police are advising motorists to expect extensive delays and to avoid the area if possible.

Earlier: Emergency services are at the scene of a serious crash on Kopu-Hikuai Road, Kopu, Thames.

The crash, involving two cars, was reported to Police around 9.10am, a police spokesperson says.

“Initial indications suggest one person has received serious injuries.”

“The road is blocked and diversions are in place through Paeroa and Whangamata.”

“The Serious Crash Unit has been notified.”

New Zealand Transport Agency says, motorists are advised to delay their journey and to avoid the area.

“The detour is likely to add a further 1 hour and 20 minutes to the journey time.”

Traffic is detoured in both directions. Westbound: Use SH25 to Waihi, SH2 to Paeroa and SH26 to Kopu. Eastbound: Use SH26 to Paeroa, SH2 to Waihi then SH25 to Hikuai. Eastern Coromandel bound traffic (Whitianga) consider using SH25 via Thames.
