Guy Fawkes: Would locals support a fireworks ban?

Next Saturday fireworks will go on sale across the country over a four-day period. With Guy Fawkes creeping up quickly, The SunLive took to the streets of Tauranga asking residents what their thoughts are on personal sale fireworks, and if they would support a ban of the colourful explosives.

Pam Watson, Mount Maunganui

What are your thoughts on personal sale fireworks?

I don’t like it because there are so many people that get burned every year. People aren’t always responsible with fireworks and I don’t like that we can go and just buy them.

Would you support a ban?

I would – it’s dangerous. But as for public displays, I am all for it, it is a lot of fun. I love it. It needs to be controlled.

Andrea Ainsworth, Arataki

What are your thoughts on personal sale fireworks?

It’s all a bit of fun, I am okay with it. It’s an excuse to celebrate, have fun and be social.

Would you support a ban?

No, it needs to be regulated, but it doesn’t need to be banned. I don’t have any concerns with the fireworks being sold at the moment.

Peter De Graaf, Mount Maunganui

What are your thoughts on personal sale fireworks?

Too many animals get traumatised and too many accidents happen with uncontrolled fireworks. Fireworks go off all the time at all hours of the night and it just stops people from sleeping.

Would you support a ban?

I would support a ban, like the public fireworks display.

Todd Evans, Mount Maunganui

What are your thoughts on personal sale fireworks?

I think it’s great, people need to celebrate.

Would you support a ban?

Not particularly, if people are responsible with it and have fun then I am okay with that. Sometimes people light them off too many days after Guy Fawkes. People do need to move on from doing that.

Louise Swainson, Papamoa

What are your thoughts on personal sale fireworks?

That’s a tricky one, we love it for the kid factor. The small ones to have in our back yard like the sprinklers. But I am not a fan of the massive ones that get sold because they scare… my daughter. I can’t say yes and I can’t say no, but the sprinklers are fun for the kid's factor.

Would you support a ban?

I probably would support it, yes, but my husband would be devastated because he loves them. He’s the guy who will stock up on heaps just in case they don’t sell them next year.

Elle Doherty, Mount Maunganui

What are your thoughts on personal sale fireworks?

It should be only like public events, instead of people being able to buy them personally. They put on a better show and it’s easier and safer for animals and children.

Would you support a ban?

I don’t wanna be like the negative Nancy, I would like to see more regulation though, not a complete ban.

Chloe Carter, Brookfield

What are your thoughts on personal sale fireworks?

Our dog hates them, but as long as people aren’t taking the piss doing it late at night then I am okay with it.

Would you support a ban?

Not banned, but more restrictions. Everyone is always going to ruin it for someone else but some people do it properly.

Luke McKay, Ngaruawahia

What are your thoughts on personal sale fireworks?

It’s good. It’s a fun thing to do with the family.

Would you support a ban?

Nah. The fun police shut down a lot of things in this day and age. It’s nice to just have something you can have some fun with. The world is so PC now and there are so many rules around everything it’s getting a bit lame. Keep the fireworks for sure.

Fireworks

Ban public sales. Some people are plain stupid. We live in a DOC area north of Waihi where there is a total fire ban for 3 to 4 months over Xmas period, and fire by permit only for the rest of the year. We get them let off at any time here, it is dangerous and inconsiderate.

BAN FIREWORKS FOR GOOD

I would love to see the end of them some people are cruel to animals with them which is not nice plus things catch fire of people let them off way after it’s finish or to the end of these silly things.

Love Them But . . .

I’d be the first to say I love fireworks however perhaps it is time to go for public displays only. Too many idiots spoil it for others. As for calling it Guy Fawkes - we need to find a new celebration for them as celebrating an attempted terrorist attack may not be the greatest idea now-a-days. I mean are we going to have a Bin Laden day?! Why not change it to NZ day . . . Just a thought (perhaps a cracker of a thought)
