Ditch the car this Sunday

Will you be ditching your vehicle this weekend.

People are being encouraged to ditch their cars for World Car Free Day on Sunday.

Tauranga City Council is inviting people to come to the party on World Car Free Day between 10am and 3pm on 1st Ave.

“It’s promising to be a fun day bursting with entertainment and full of inspiration to consider new travel habits.”

Tauranga is celebrating World Car Free Day together with more than 46 countries and 2,000 cities around the world.

“We need to focus on moving more people more efficiently,” says council transportation manager Martin Parkes.

“Through World Car Free Day, we can work towards changing attitudes towards transport and enlightening people to alternative ways of travelling around our city.”
The free community event organised by Tauranga City Council has the following family-friendly activities lined up:

  • Ice skating
  • Bike, skate, scooter track
  • Displays and check out how to use the bike rack on the bus
  • Giant games
  • Face painting
  • Treasure hunt
  • Colouring-in mural
  • Urban chill out zone
  • Sausage sizzle (10am - 1pm)
  • DJ (Will Johnston) from The Hits (10am - 1pm)
  • TravelSafe’s Ruben & Ruby the Bear (morning)
  • Dan The Puppet Man (afternoon)

Getting to this event is the perfect opportunity to leave the car at home for a change and try other ways of transport. Grab your bike, take a stroll or give the bus a go.

Bayhopper travel will be free for the whole day and people will get the chance to learn how to load a bike onto the front of the bus with a bus parked at the First Avenue community event.

Interesting facts:

  • 63 per cent of Tauranga’s carbon emissions come from transport, mostly cars and trucks. (Source: Tauranga Carbon Footprint Emissions Report 2017))
  • 1 bus = up to 40 fewer cars on the road
  • Approximately 80% of car journeys in Tauranga are made by single occupancy vehicles

Ditch the car. For a better option why not drive down to the CBD and fill your car boot up with all the good bargains from the shops that are all open and would love to see you. There will be free all parking all day and no parking wardens around to spoil your day in town. Have fun!!!!

What about disabled people...

who can’t get around? Who cant ice skate, ride a bike etc? What about people who live out of town? How can they get to this great event? What about those who need to go to work? Wake up!

I do hope..........

....a true, honest and factual account of this event is documented on Monday, and without wishful thinking/idealogical woke left garbage, be consigned to the failure that it is. How dare the Tauranga City council suggest how I should behave on a Sunday or any other day of the week!..AND..at my ratepayer expense!..mind you, I suspect Dan the Puppet man will fit the bill nicely within the TCC organisation quite nicely :(
