Oropi Road is expected to be re-opened from 5.30pm this evening, between Cheyne Road and Oropi Stream Bridge, to one lane of traffic.

A Tauranga City Council spokesperson says a 24-hour stop/go system will be in place.

“The detour is no longer required. Please drive cautiously over this repaired section of the road.

“Once we have completed some testing work tomorrow, we will be able to temporarily re-open both lanes by tomorrow evening.

“There will be a partial road closure in a few weeks time to undertake the permanent repair.

“We will provide updates when available.”

This tiny tiny road failure highlights the need for a few link roads going cross-country joining nearby ridge communities before the ’big-one’, whether storm or quake hits and causes real chaos and takes out the dodgey south escape routes too. Something for WBoP Council to get onto about right NOW ?
