Tauranga to host pirate-themed disco
Acclaimed Kiwi Comedian Penny Ashton is setting sail for Tauranga this coming weekend and bringing two shows with her to Baycourt Community & Arts Centre X Space.
A familiar face to local audiences, this time around Penny will don her pirate hat as Captain Pinky to delight Tauranga’s youngest theatregoers with ‘Captain Pinky’s Pirate Toddler Boogie’ at 11am on Saturday May 25.
‘Captain Pinky’ is a pirate-themed disco aimed at children aged up to five years old and promises to be packed with solid gold hits, sea shanties and plenty of bad jokes. Parents are also encouraged to join in the dancing, and whilst eye patches and pirate hats are not compulsory, they will be very much welcomed at the Saturday morning show.
Baycourt manager James Wilson is delighted to bring the show to Tauranga, saying the Baycourt team are always on the look-out for great shows for young people and their families.
“Penny is a fantastic performer- and I know that Tauranga kids will love her energy and inventiveness, and be in for a great time at ‘Captain Pinky’s Pirate Toddler Boogie’,”says James.
Programming for young people has always been at the heart of Baycourt and the centre is very lucky to host thousands of school students each year, through events like the International Youth Silent Film Festival, and Tauranga Primary Schools Music Festival.
In recent weeks, the venue has been packed with excited young audiences, with visits from Capital E National Theatre for Children who performed ‘Mr. McGee and the Biting Flea’, and Wellington based Trick of the Light Theatre company’s sold-out dark fairy-tale ‘The Road That Wasn’t There’.
“At Baycourt we are profoundly committed to giving young people from all backgrounds access to the arts, in order to develop their creative, social and personal potential,” says James. “In particular, we recognise the power of bringing young people into the theatre at an early age and opening up a world of storytelling, expression and play.”
Baycourt and Penny Ashton presents ‘Captain Pinky’s Pirate Toddler Boogie’ in the Baycourt Community & Arts Centre X Space on Saturday May 25, 11am.
