Powerco expects it will take most of the day to repair the damage to part of its network in Waihi after a truck took out three poles there this morning.

Powerco Network Operations Manager Phil Marsh says the accident happened in Kenny Rd about 6.30am which had cut supply to 130 customers in the commercial and industrial area of the town.

“There is considerable damage to the network and we are assessing the extent of that.

“There are three poles down but this has impacted on the stability of other poles in the immediate vicinity. Two underground cables are damaged along with a number of overhead assets.”

The area had been isolated and traffic bypasses put in place to assist contractors as they start repair work.

Phil wants to apologise to the affected customers and urged anyone without power to contact their retailer.
