Man in custody after Thornton firearms incident
A 23-year-old man has been taken into custody following an incident in Thornton, near Whakatane.
A police spokesperson says East Bank Road is expected to be reopened shortly.
The road was originally closed due to the police operation that was happening on the road.
Police attended the property on East Bank Road at around 2.30pm after receving reports of a male possibly with a firearm.
“There have been no injuries,” says a police spokesperson.
A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says the school had been evacuated and students were taken to the Edgecumbe fire station.
AOS were called in to assist with police in the operation.
