Schools in lockdown after gunshot reports

UPDATE 9.50AM: A photographer at the scene says the lockdown has been taken down.

UPDATED 9.15AM: Two Tauranga schools have gone into lockdown this morning following reports of gunshots.

A police spokesperson has confirmed that police are responding to a reported firearms incident in the Bellevue area.

"Bellevue Primary School has voluntarily gone into lockdown and Police are making enquiries.

"AOS has been advised but is just on standby at this stage."

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says Otumoetai College has also gone into lockdown as a precautionary measure.

A photograher at the scene says there is an officer using a loud speaker advising people to stay indoors.


A Tauranga school is reported to be in lockdown this morning.

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says children are being turned away at the gate of Bellevue Primary and are being told to come back later.

She told SunLive that there had been shots heard in the Bellevue area.

"Bellevue school in lockdown due to gun shots in nearby house on boundary of school," says another reader who has contacted us through Facebook.

People are also reporting the lockdown on the Bay of Plenty Accidents Facebook page.

"I'm at Otumoetai College and we have gone into lockdown too," says a comment on the Bay of Plenty Accidents and Traffice Facebook page.
