Power out after car hits pole near Katikati

Update 4pm - A number of residents are without power, after a car crashed into a power pole near Katikati.

More than 383 homes in Katikati have been affected by the outage, according to the Powerco website.

Power is expected to be restored by 7.30pm.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand northern communications shift manager Daniel Nicholson says the outage is a result of a crash.

"A power pole has been hit by a car near Hikurangi Road.

"Wires have snapped and contractors are now at the scene working to repair the damage."

Reports are coming in of a power pole fire near Katikati this afternoon.

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says fire fighters are currently at the scene of the fire near Hikurangi Road.

"It looks as though the pole has been hit by a car," they said.
