Arataki Kindergarten wins mural comp
Arataki Kindergarten has taken out the top spot in the Early Childhood Centre Category of the Keep New Zealand Beautiful Wall Worthy competition.
From a strong field of entries nationwide, and after pipping the other finalists at the post, Arataki Kindergarten has won the opportunity to bring their mural design to life this year thanks to the Keep New Zealand Beautiful Wall Worthy competition, proudly sponsored by Resene.
In their submission, Arataki Kindergarten says the story behind their mural design is one of local and cultural significance:
"Our mural will depict one of the local pūrākau or Māori legends that tell the story of three local mountains that many of our children and families are connected to. The themes behind this pūrākau include kotahitanga - working together for the collective, manaakitanga - taking care of each other, and taking care of our environment and whanaungatanga - family connections and relationships that sustain us."
Keep New Zealand Beautiful CEO Heather Saunderson says together with Resene, they’re excited to bring Wall Worthy back for 2018.
“Studies have shown that mural art increases civic pride and decreases anti-social behaviour (such as littering and graffiti) around them, so we’re thrilled to help Arataki Kindergarten paint their corner of New Zealand even more beautiful.”
The Wall Worthy competition ran in schools through Term One, with schools and their students invited to submit mural designs with local or environmental significance. From a strong field of entries, finalists were chosen and put to public vote to determine the winners.
Almost 2000 votes were received as teachers, parents, students, and communities got behind their local schools. The winning designs receive an electronic prize, along with a $750 Resene paint voucher and other materials to paint their mural.
On winning the award, Arataki Kindergarten project co-ordinator Roxy Burt says, “Children, families and staff of Arataki Kindergarten are super excited to hear that we have won the Wall Worthy competition.
“This is such an awesome opportunity to further preserve and bring to life the local legends of our area. As well as that it’s a fabulous way to celebrate our 40th Jubilee taking place next month. Thank you to all the sponsors of this fantastic prize.”
