UPDATED 4.30PM: Two people have been arrested following a lengthy police pursuit.

A stolen vehicle was seen passing through Katikati heading south on State Highway 2 towards Tauranga at around 2.48pm, says a police spokesperson.

"The driver failed to stop at Whakamarama and a pursuit was initiated.

"The vehicle was abandoned in a rural area outside Te Puna, and the pair stole another vehicle and continued to flee."

Road spikes were deployed on Minden Road, while the vehicle was eventually stopped on SH2.

"Two people have been arrested and are currently in police custody."

A police pursuit is believed to be underway in the Western Bay of Plenty this afternoon.

A caller to the SunLive newsroom says a ’light brown Ford Falcon’ raced up Esdaile Road earlier, pursued by police.

She says the car came back down to hook onto the highway a few minutes later.

"There’s a dent in the car, and he’s really hooning. It’s scary because if anyone’s on the road walking or cycling, they’ll be hit. He’ll take somebody out."

Another caller also says police have blocked a lane of Wairoa Road, with more police cars present in the area.

A third further caller has said he was driving on the highway near Mr McGregors Fruit Shop when several police cars came past pursuing ’a little hatchback’. He says the vehicle was stopped between McGregors and the Te Puna roundabout.

Police have been contacted for comment.

Heading out of tauranga for a few days could have gone terribly wrong when a high speed police chase coming towards us could have ended in disaster. Scary.
