Fantastic beaches, beautiful natural landmarks, prominent Māori history and robust tourism-related infrastructure.
The Bay of Plenty has it all, as an incredibly successful cruise ship season illustrates.
We welcomed 228,904 passengers on 115 cruise ships during the 2018/2019 season - 79,189 more passengers compared to the previous season.
Translating to an estimated $91 million in visitor spending in the Bay of Plenty, this was a $25m increase on the $66m the previous year.
But we know we can, and need to, make it an even greater visitor experience where locals and tourists alike can enjoy a full range of activities year-round – not just between November and April.
Our Destination Development Plan will focus our efforts on targeting the right visitors at the right time and offering them the most ‘Bay of Plenty’ experiences that we can.
By creating a transformative destination experience for visitors, establishing a higher quality of life for its residents and striking a true balance between economic, social, environmental and cultural objectives, we will use tourism to generate a benefit that goes far beyond economic value alone.
As we move into this ‘shoulder season’, we are committed to reducing the impacts of seasonality so that businesses have increased patronage throughout the year, instead of during just the summer peak.
Local events, good weather, targeted promotions domestically and internationally, and ever-increasing cruise passenger numbers all contribute to this growth.
Our current domestic campaign enticing Wellingtonians to escape the capital and head north for some sun during the winter months (May to November) is a prime example.
Bolstering these winter months holds the key to realising our tourism potential.
