It’s been a very busy year for the Government and we have achieved a lot – the families package, increased Working for Families payments, extension to paid parental leave, the first Kiwibuild homes built and sold, the winter energy payment, making GP visits cheaper for 600,000 Kiwis, the Pike River Recovery Programme, free fees for first-year tertiary students, the list goes on.

I’ve received ‘thank you’ cards from pensioners saying that because of the Winter Energy Payment they’ve been able to heat their home throughout winter – and for the first time in years they haven’t had to worry about their power bills. A woman wrote recently saying ‘thank you’ for the increase in support for families, which meant she was able to buy her daughter sanitary products and she didn’t miss school due to not having these essential items.

Locally, it has also been a busy year too. I’ve visited many organisations and met with hundreds of people – that’s the best part of the job, connecting with the people and hearing their stories. So I’d like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to the community for welcoming me as a new MP. Thank you also to those organisations that asked me to speak at their meetings.

And thank you to the people who supported the ‘Knit for Jacinda’ campaign locally by donating beautifully knitted items, which we gifted to The Salvation Army; and thanks to those who donated items for our homeless, and books for the children of the Solomon Islands.

I hope you all have a wonderful festive season and all the best for 2019.
