Police investigating a fatal crash that occurred at Tirau on Friday are seeking sightings of the car before the crash.

Bay of Plenty road policing Senior Sergeant Fane Troy says the grey Mazda sedan crashed south of Tirau on State Highway 5 at around 10.20am.

“Anyone who saw the car on Friday morning in the South Waikato area, or who may have information that could assist Police, is asked to contact Taupo Police Station on (07) 378 6060.”

The crash, which killed the female driver of the vehicle, also caused the highway to be closed for a time, before reopening to one lane.

The crash happened in an area of roadworks, and while police do not believe the roadworks contributed to the crash, it is a reminder for motorists to take care in these areas.
