Fatal crash in Mount Maunganui

A motorcyclist has died at the scene following a serious crash on Totara Street this morning.

Police were called to the crash between SH2 Hewletts Road, and Waimarie Street at about 9.30am, says a police media spokesperson.

"The road is closed while emergency services respond.

"Diversions are being put in place at the intersections of Totara Street and Hull Road, and Totara Street and Hewletts Road.

"The Police Serious Crash Unit is investigating and the road will be closed for some time. 

"Police ask that motorists avoid the area where possible and are patient if they experience delays."

Reports are coming in of a crash involving a motorcyclist and a truck near Mount Maunganui.

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says it's happened on Totara Street. 

"It seems as if it's pretty serious, traffic is built up in the area and the person looks as if they are quite badly injured.

"They look as if they are crushed under the front of the truck.

"This has happened outside Seeka and the shipping container yard on Totara Street.

"The road is blocked at the moment and emergency services are at the scene."
